Tears of Other People – Evie M. Ippolito

The Tears of Other People is an attempt by author E. M. Ippolito to make sense of her alienation from her hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Both local history and personal memoir, the book explores the history of discriminatory programs on the New Hampshire seacoast, from gentrification to European colonization, charting personal and political connections across decades of urban change. Dispossession has an infamous history on the beautiful Portsmouth waterfront, where in the 1960s a colonial museum called Strawbery Banke displaced the working-class neighborhood of Puddle Dock. Decades later, former resident Evelyn Marconi remarked, “You’ll never build anything successful on the tears of other people.” Beautiful or not, every American city is a settler colony built on racialized class conflict, and stolen land, and the tears of other people. To cultivate community in a place defined by displacement has always been an act of resistance.

Evie (E. M. Ippolito) was raised a settler on unceded Abenaki-Pennacook land in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is a trans writer of fiction and nonfiction living in Brooklyn, Lenapehoking, where she pursues a degree in library information science.

GOOD SPORT

Brendan and I were thrilled, beyond measure, to finally unveil our latest risograph print collaboration. It had been a long and arduous journey, filled with countless hours of tireless brainstorming and experimenting with a myriad of color combinations. Yet, all the effort and the sleepless nights were worth it, as we had arrived at a design that not only met but surpassed our wildest expectations. It was a remarkable achievement, a creation that flawlessly captured our shared vision.
The risograph technique, with its distinctive texture and depth, brought our artwork to life in ways we could never have imagined. Each print exuded a sense of uniqueness and individuality that was captivating and enchanting. As we carefully examined the final product, every stroke and every hue, we couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the profound sense of pride and fulfillment that washed over us. It was as if, in that very moment, we had tasted the sweetest fruits of our labor.
Beyond the mere artistic triumph, this project had become so much more than just a collaboration. It had become a catalyst, forging a deeper bond between us as friends and artists. Through our relentless pursuit of perfection and our unwavering commitment to creative exploration, we had grown closer, discovering facets of each other's artistic souls that had previously remained hidden. This shared endeavor had ignited a flame within us, fueling our passion and reaffirming the extraordinary power of collaboration.
And now, standing on the precipice of unveiling our masterpiece to the world, our excitement and anticipation were palpable. We yearned to share this enchanting creation with others, hoping it would resonate with their hearts and minds, stirring within them the same joy and inspiration that had consumed us during its conception. To know that our creation, born from the deepest recesses of our souls, could touch others in such a profound way was a humbling and exhilarating thought.
As the day of the grand unveiling drew nearer, our hearts beat with a sense of earnest expectation. We knew that our risograph print held the potential to be more than just a piece of art. It had the power to transcend the boundaries of its medium, to ignite the spark of creativity and imagination in those who gaze upon it. And so, with bated breath, we readied ourselves to lift the veil and expose our labor of love to the eager eyes of the world.

drink me book launch

I met Tal at the Brooklyn Art Book Fair in 2018, in a gym at McCarren Park. He was tabling for GenderFail, working at a bookstore, writing poetry. Over the years, I’ve heard him read, read his work, made books with his friends, watched him make books at various presses. And now, I finally get to make his book with him. This feels special!

We’re celebrating the launch in Brooklyn on June 17th at Secret Riso Club.

If you’re reading this and you’re local (or if you’re an amazing friend and flying across the country to hear Tal read) please join us!

You’ll also get to hear from a number of other incredible writers and pick up your copy of drink me <3
